Trouble updating itunes on windows xp

I tried to update the patch, but it won't download.Whenever I clicked the download button, IE6 would freeze up and wouldn't download anything.
So I clicked to view more info and it said I needed to do some Microsoft security patch updates in order to reinstall IE8.
I've also tried to do an new install and receive the same message when the install attempts to remove the old files resident on the hard drive. The path 'C:\Documents and Setting\[user name]\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\Apple Software Update\i Tunes.msi' cannot be found.
